dethroning mammonAinslie and Barrie Green are running a course this Lent based on Justin Welby’s book.

When? - Six consecutive Wednesdays in Lent 15:00 – 17:00 beginning 8th March

The Archbishop’s 2017 Lent book challenges us to think about our attitudes to money. “Who will direct our actions and attitudes? Is it Jesus Christ, who brings truth, hope and freedom? Or is it Mammon, so attractive, so clear, but leading us into paths that tangle, trip and deceive?”

If you want to take part you will need to get the book and read a chapter per week in preparation for the session. The book is available from Amazon France for 12.20€ inc delivery or the kindle version is on Amazon UK for £6.64.

April 2016 Retreat for Women: The Prodigal Daughter

retreatOver the weekend of April 1-3rd 2016, fifteen amazing women from Chaplaincy of Aquitaine churches - and via personal links – ‘landed’ at Suzanne Reason’s gite, 45 minutes west of Riberac. The theme for our 48 hours together was ‘The Prodigal Daughter’, based on Luke 15 and was led by Madeleine Holmes and Rev'd Charlotte Sullivan from the Chaplaincy Team and Amanda Allchorn from Montignac and the UK. (Madeleine and Amanda are also Spiritual Directors in training).

The farm house and gîte were the perfect spot for our time away, time to stop, time to draw closer to God, share our lives with each other and have fun – and the lovely spring weather was a blessing too! The programme included a rich mixture of times of prayer, sharing, bible study, creative sessions (collage making and writing letters to God) and of course ‘cuppas and cake’!

held by christOver the weekend we focused on the 3 main characters within this famous passage from Luke 15. By using the paintings of ‘The Return of the Prodigal’ by Rembrandt and ‘Prodigal Daughter’ by Charlie Mackesy we reflected on our own spiritual journeys - as the daughter, elder sister and mother. It became apparent to all of us that at times in our lives we can be all 3, even at the same time.

The openness amongst the ladies was wonderful, which in turn gave opportunities for some to start new journeys of healing and deepening their faith. Many of us are over 50 years old, and have experienced many ‘highs and lows’ of life, including bereavements, divorce, loss, redundancy and broken dreams. As the 48 hours progressed and new friendships were made, many of the ladies ministered to each other over cuppas, on a walk and over meals simply through openness, listening and praying for each other.

One lady said “It's felt good to take time to look at our lives and evaluate where we are from a spiritual viewpoint. Listening to others and sharing our own stories helped me too. I experienced the whole weekend as a time of healing. I am so grateful to Amanda, Charlotte and Madeleine for all that we shared together."

gite for retreatAnother lady said: "Something has shifted.  I walked away lighter in spirit after the weekend retreat having shared some precious time in the company of a rare group of women. The strength of their kindness and support was palpable. I shall remember this experience as a very positive turning point in my own life and feel very privileged to have crossed paths, albeit briefly with oracles and daughters such as these."

Finally, on Sunday, just before lunch, we shared a lovely simple Communion Service together, led by Madeleine and Charlotte. As we ‘bought the threads together’, there was a huge sense of holiness and Christ’s presence with us.

Already the ladies are asking ‘what’s next?’. Whilst we are not quite sure we do hope to have a ‘reunion’ later in 2016. If you have any queries please do email Rev'd Charlotte Sullivan. Also do visit Amanda’s new website ‘Journeys in a Lifetime’ (www.amandaallchorn.com).
