Celebration in Bordeaux of 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation

reform celebrationsA terrific celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation took place in Bordeaux the weekend of October 13th-15th, entitled "Vivre la Fraternité à Bordeaux". Key representatives from various Christian churches in the south west attended, with a welcome given by Pasteur Valérie Mali from the Bordeaux United Protestant church. The weekend featured processions, exhibitions, prayers, talks about the importance of protecting the Christians all over the world, blessings, a cocktail party, debates...

The culmination of this celebration took place as a combined service of worship of all the Bordeaux Protestants, including the Anglican Church, represented by Nellie Salvi, in the historic theatre Anthénée, the first time this city-owned building was used for a religious service. The celebration featured old Reformation hymns, Scripture readings, hymns of praise and thanksgiving, and prayers of intercession. Pasteur Mali led the service, while Pasteur Clavaroily, who is from Bergerac, delivered the spirit filled sermon based on the Prodigal Son.

The weekend celebrations were rounded off with further debate and an open air shared picnic in the beautiful gardens of the Mairie. The Lord provided glorious weather throughout!

Pasteur Valérie Mali did express her wish for a much closer collaboration between the Eglise Protestante Unie in Bordeaux and the Anglican Church in Bordeaux, and of course with the Chaplaincy as a whole . Christine Rychlewski, as our Ecumenical Contact, will lead this drive in Bordeaux. I assured her that we shared her vision of and desire for closer contact to the glory of our Lord, Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the World.

Reformation Celebration in the Joy of Reconciliation, while denouncing the continuing Persecution of Christians the World Over.

Sunday School and Youth Group

i am a child of godAt the end of the summer holidays, we must wish a big welcome to our new families in the Sunday School! It was a blessing to see all of those faces last Sunday, both newcomers and 'old' stalwarts.

There were more than twenty children representing Ghana, Australia, Poland, Nigeria, the US, Singapore, Madagascar, France and England. How diverse can we get? And that’s not cheating and counting our new medical student from Albania!

What a wonderful way to start the new school year! Let’s hope and pray that we all continue to mature in the understanding of Jesus and His love for us in the up and coming future!

Glorious Easter Day Sunrise Service at the Bordeaux Cathedral

Peter Luson writes: On a cool, grey morning at 7.17 am on Easter Day some dozen members of Bordeaux Anglican Church joined a large crowd of worshippers at the west door of Bordeaux Cathedral to celebrate the risen Lord. This was an ecumenical occasion, and the first part of the service was led by the French Protestant Church.

We then walked to the south door, singing alleluias all the while, where the Orthodox Church continued the celebration.

Next it was the turn of the Anglicans as we moved to the great south door, the Royal Door, where centuries before, Eleanor of Aquitaine entered the Cathedral to be married. We began by singing the hymn ‘ Jesus Christ is risen today’, with the help of the small ecumenical choir which had been assembled for the occasion. This was followed by the reading of the Gospel by Ecumenical Officer Christine Rychlewski, and by a sermon preached in French by Locum Priest, the Revd Peter Jordan, on Luke ch 24 : ‘Jésus vit… vraiment. On doit partager cette bonne nouvelle’.  A further hymn and a prayer rounded off our part of the service.

We then entered the Cathedral, and the final part of the service was led by the Catholic Church, with the sermon preached by the Archbishop of Bordeaux, Cardinal Ricard. The service was concluded with the blessing given by the Cardinal, flanked by Peter Jordan and the Protestant Pastor.

Afterwards we were treated to hot coffee and viennoiseries outside on the square. Alleluia, alleluia, Christ is risen indeed !

Blessings and thanks to Rev'd Peter and Barbara Jordan

the jordansBlessings and Au Revoir to Barbara and Peter Jordan: The Presbytery now being their favourite Airbnb in Southwest France… the Jordans fell right back into the fold of the Bordeaux Church just before Lent began. We are so grateful for the time and energy they have once again dedicated to our church and its future and wish them well in their next ministry challenge in Strasbourg. We'll miss you!

Peter and Barbara Jordan write: "We have very much enjoyed our stay in this Chaplaincy again. It has been good to be a part of a vibrant and growing church in Bordeaux and in Aquitaine. We will continue to pray for you and for your future growth. Thank you."

Au Revoir and Merci to Rev'd David and Margaret Kirby

As the song goes, "We've got that joy, joy, joy, joy, down in our heart"!

We are delighted to share photos of the Family Communion Service today, Rev'd David Kirby's last service in Bordeaux - with thanks to the Kirbys for all they've done - and a Happy Birthday to Holi.
