‘Reflecting on the meaning of the Nicene Creed’

This very special course by the Diocese in Europe marks the 1700th anniversary in 2025 of the Council of Nicaea, a key moment in the history of Christian faith and a vital ‘staging post’ on the journey towards Christian unity.

In the Chaplaincy of Aquitaine we are delighted to offer the course to anyone who would like to reflect on the meaning of the Nicene Creed in rather more depth than might be expected in the context of a Lent course,  and we specially invite all responsible for leading worship to take part in the context of their continuing ministerial training and development.

The course aims:

  • 1) To learn about the Nicene Creed, and the place of creeds more generally in the church’s life and liturgy
  • 2) To understand the meaning of the Nicene Creed. The words of the Creed are not straightforward and so they need to be explained.
  • 3) To be inspired by the Nicene Creed. Deeper understanding of our faith is never for our sake but so that we may serve God more faithfully, in worship and mission.

There are 5 x 90 minute sessions, available on Zoom. In addition we strongly recommend that to get the very best from the course, participants take the opportunity to read, watch or listen to a wide and fascinating variety of highly accessible materials that provide essential background.

Links to all these are given in the course materials, which are available by clicking here.

To give enough time to do this, the course will take place on alternating Thursday evenings

from 19.30 to 21.00 fortnightly during Lent and the Easter season:

20th March, 3rd April, 17th April, 1st May, 15th May

The course will be led by Rev’d Dr Helen Savage
