‘Setting the scene for Christmas’

As Christians, we believe that some of prophesies of Isaiah and Micah, especially those traditionally read in Christmas Carol services, help us to understand more fully the meaning of Jesus’s coming.

They also raise lots of important new questions for us today.

Each week we’ll briefly explore the often deeply troubled historical and religious backgrounds against which Isaiah and Micah wrote their prophesies.

This will then lead us to explore more deeply what are the abiding truths that sustain us in our lives as followers of Jesus Christ today. Just like a musical score, the Bible has to be performed in our real lives for its truths to become clear so that we can more fully embrace it as the living Word of God.

I first wrote the course in 2021 for my parishes in the North of England. The lively discussion that followed from them prompted me to suggest that with a few timely revisions we might find them helpful here too. As well as the Zoom sessions they are available for use in small group sessions, face-to-face or for private reflection.

I very much hope that you will enjoy the course as we explore afresh these remarkable passages of Scripture.
